By observing the natural design found in the intricacies of various flowers and plants, Flower Clvb seeks to deconstruct implicit aesthetic bias and unconscious ways in which standards of beauty are delegated and imposed. Through offering immersive educational opportunities, Flower Clvb hopes to begin reconstructing notions of beauty by considering the variety of colors, textures, patterns, shapes, flaws and mysteries that make up all living things. Flower Clvb sees plants as teachers and the garden as a classroom where individuals gain a new aesthetic perspective and further invoke gratitude, care and compassion for the earth among all the living organisms who share it.
1. Garden Clvb offers school aged students the opportunity to participate in and observe the beauty that surrounds them and to provide a space for asking questions of themselves and the natural world. By inviting children to explore how math might be used to plan a landscape, how reading and writing are important ways to express new ideas, and why asking questions without finding answers is an essential part of envisioning new futures, students make connections that compliment what they are learning within the school walls. If you are a school or a community garden interested in hosting Flower Clvb, email Grace McDonald: Grace@flowerclvb.com. To see pictures from previous Garden Clvbs, click HERE.
2. Flower Clvb is kind of like book club but rather than read books, friends and strangers gather together to arrange flowers. During Flower Clvb gatherings, participants learn foam free design techniques, cultivate a love for the natural world, and identify where to source local and seasonal flowers. If you live in Brooklyn and are interested in one of these gatherings, you can email Grace@flowerclvb.com or fill out the form below. You do not need any experience to participate! The cost is just $30/CLVB to cover the flowers and refreshments. CLVB meets quarterly. You can come once or come every time! To see pictures from previous Flower Clvbs, click HERE.
The date of our next CLVB is Saturday, August 10th, 2019.
